How I Let My Algorithm Lead Me to NYC’s Indie Rock Scene
A beginner’s guide to discovering the city’s best local bands and live shows.
New York’s indie rock scene might be the best thing to happen to music in a decade.
While social media rewards bite-sized, viral choruses, New York City’s new wave is bringing back what really matters: gritty guitar riffs, layered lyrics, and full-bodied indie rock songs made for something deeper than mass consumption.
One of my favorite parts of living in New York City is how easy it is to see live music. I can hop on a train and be in a different borough in under an hour to catch a pop-up show from a favorite indie band or discover a new artist at an intimate lounge. Last month, I saw Dallas Wax open for Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers at Baby’s All Right, and it made me believe rock and roll never died. We also caught Stolen Gin’s set at Gov Ball, and it transported us back to the days of classic rock legends like Huey Lewis and the News. And we would have never discovered Stolen Gin if we hadn’t seen them open for Quarters of Change.
But I’m not here to name-drop every band in Brooklyn. I just really love a good show, and I’ll always show up for local artists. But how do you find your local scene?
It’s pretty simple. Train your algorithm.
How to Use Algorithms to Discover Local Indie Music in NYC
Many people don’t realize that music discovery algorithms can work for you. While it might feel creepy that your For You Page or recommended playlists seem to “know” you, it’s really just machine learning tracking your behavior. When you understand how these algorithms curate your feed, you can learn to guide them toward what you want.
Try searching and engaging with hashtags on social media like #nycindie, #brooklynmusic, #indierocknyc, #nyclivemusic, and #supportlocalmusic. These will connect you to the city’s indie bands, underground shows, and local music communities. Following local venues, engaging with band videos, and exploring hashtags on platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts will bring more NYC indie rock content right to your feed without any extra searching. Over time, your feed will show you more localized content and better recommendations.
If you’re already adjusting your social media feeds for local music, apply the same strategy to your streaming apps. On Spotify, streaming local indie bands signals the algorithm to suggest similar artists. Using the “Artist Radio” feature for a favorite band helps you discover related acts you might’ve missed. Plus, if you enable location access, Spotify’s Live Events tab highlights concerts near you based on your listening habits.
Apple Music’s Listen Now section functions a bit differently—it’s less geo-targeted—but following and saving local indie artists still helps it tailor suggestions.
For those serious about uncovering underground and DIY indie bands, Bandcamp is essential. You can browse by city or neighborhood, follow NYC indie labels, and support artists directly.
This is just my beginner advice. I’m not deep in the scene yet, but even from the outside, it’s obvious that New York City is where the next generation of rock and roll legends will be made.
If you’ve ever cried to a band that only 12 people know, or ghosted someone because you saw them wear flip-flops in Manhattan… this is your corner of the internet.
